Abortion Can Cause Mental Disorders?

Efforts to termination of pregnancy or abortion did not increase the risk of mental disorders in the perpetrators. This was revealed in research conducted in Denmark to 365,550 teenagers and women who have had abortions or gave birth to her first child.

In that study, all respondents were healthy women with no history of mental problems that require them to receive treatment in hospital. The researchers used data on hospital registration nationwide in order to trace the medical history of respondents, before and after abortion.

The study was conducted to see the mental health of respondents during the period 1995 and 2007. In that period 84 620 women had abortions and 280,930 women gave birth to her first child.

The researchers then compared the mental health status before and after abortion. During the year after abortion, 15 of 1,000 women perform psychiatric counseling. This amount is equivalent to women who seek counseling assistance nine months before the act of abortion.

According to researchers, women who have had abortions usually from groups who had been having emotional problems since the beginning. Most women in this group also have a low economic level and having an unwanted pregnancy. However, this study did not find out why the pregnancy was terminated.

Abortion in Denmark is an act of legal and regulated in the legislation since 1973.
Meanwhile, a group of women who give birth and experiencing mental health problems is higher. Seven out of 1,000 women giving birth receive counseling therapy. This number increased from 4 women before they give birth.

Mental problems experienced by women from both groups were anxiety, stress, and depression.
