Epilepsy drug can cause sterility
A woman who suffered from epilepsy is a higher risk of infertile, even more so when taking anti-seizure drugs for more than three kinds. It is known from the findings of researchers from India.
From research conducted by dr. Sajeev Thomas from India has been known that a woman who suffered from epilepsy have a risk two times more likely to experience infertility compared with healthy women. In addition, a woman who took anti-seizure drugs to cope with epilepsy will experience an increased risk of infertility to 18 times.
Although further research is needed again, but drugs that overcome epileptic seizures does have negative side effects and have shown association with infertile conditions in women. This is due to that anti-seizure drugs are potentially disrupts the balance of reproductive hormones in the body.
From the results of research conducted on 375 women in India who suffer from epilepsy with an average age of 26 years and does have a plan to become pregnant. It is known that 62 percent of women are pregnant, while 38 percent had experienced infertility MAG. The researchers also suspect that it is so closely related to the amount of drugs consumed epilepsy. There are 7 percent of women who do not consume epilepsy and 32 percent of women who drank one drug epilepsy will experience infertility. And that number increased to 41 percent if epilepsy drugs consumed more than two kinds, and will increase again to 60 percent if the epilepsy drug taken more than three kinds.
Although, it remains unclear whether the sterility is due to epilepsy drug side effects, or it could be because those who take the drug are quite severe epilepsy. From the results of research conducted dr. Sajeev Thomas had confirmed that studies have been published in the journal Epilepsy & Behavior in 2009 which says that adults who suffer from epilepsy have fewer children than people with epilepsy who had no more seizures in adulthood. And some studies also show roughly the same results, that the anti-seizure medicine have risks infertile.
