FDA Recommends Ban Menthol Cigarettes
The Board of the Food and Drug Administration panel, drug regulatory agencies and American food, recommend the prohibition of sales of menthol cigarettes from the market to improve community health status.
The recommendation was made because the current 30 percent of cigarettes that circulate in the United States use menthol taste. However, the advisory board did not give a time limit when the FDA must make a decision.
In its report, the board of the FDA panel consisting of experts submitted scientific evidence and menthol have a calming effect that reduces numb tang of smoke so that the teens are more interested to start smoking and harder to stop.
Council committee also said that menthol levels tend to have lower tar and nicotine that smokers feel no need to immediately stop that bad habit. They add in fact there is no difference between the effects of menthol cigarette with regular smoking on health. Both are equally bad.
Lawrence Deyton, chief of FDA’s tobacco, said the agency would see a recent report to consider the recommendations within 90 days. Anti-smoking groups in the country welcomed the recommendation and urged the FDA to take immediate action.
