Is Frédéric Chopin An Epilepsy Sufferer?
Composer Frédéric Chopin is a person with epilepsy. This was revealed in accordance with the results of research conducted by the radiologist and neurologist from Spain.
The results of analysis by researchers, Chopin often experience hallucinations and other symptoms that refer to epilepsy. This analysis adds to the list of health diagnoses who had blamed on Chopin: from mental disorders that cause changes in mood quickly until the lung disease tuberculosis. These findings provide a new outlook on life gifted man whose life is speedy way – Chopin died at the age of 39.
According to Manuel Várquez Caruncho, radiologists at Xeral-Calde Hospital Complex in Lugo, Spain, “Fantasy-fantasy-owned Chopin is considered a manifestation of a sensitive soul and romance. But, we ignore the nature of romantic and we could understand him.” Chopin was born in 1810, and nearly all his life he was troubled by health problems from breathing problems and fever. He was emaciated, coughing, and frequent lung infections. The condition of the lungs confirmed the cause of death of Chopin. But, based on the biographies and letters of Chopin, Várquez see some descriptions of seizures. Previously, this phenomenon has never been mentioned.
From there, the radiologist is looking for a story and record of Chopin related to the symptoms of epilepsy. In a letter to the daughter of novelist George Sand, Chopin was told if he ever left the room unexpectedly while playing the Sonata in B flat minor at a concert in 1848. “I see the damned thing out of the piano I open even in the half on a Carthusian,” he wrote. Várquez Caruncho observed a pattern of associated symptoms.
Symptoms that occur in a matter of seconds to minutes and Chopin remember hallucinations in detail. His vision, which often occur at night and accompanied by fever, make Chopin disconnected from the real world. However, because Chopin had not heard strange noises and his mental condition is stable, the researcher considers Chopin did not suffer skizofernia, bipolar disorder and other psychiatric disorders.
Similarly, a study published Várquez and neurologist Brañas Francisco Fernández in the journal Medical Humanities. They also remove the possibility of migraine and poisoning due to treatment.
They concluded epilepsy as the cause of which will cause visual hallucinations caused by fear, anxiety, sleeplessness, and depression. Chopin is not the first famous person who suffered from epilepsy. Joan of Arc and Vincent Van Gogh were diagnosed with the disease.
