IQ, Really Can Change the Age When Teens?

iqHigh and low levels of intelligence quotient (IQ) are considered a person for a lifetime will not change. However, for the first time those scientists say that IQ scores can be increased or decreased in their teens.

In the journal Nature, scientists from University College London, UK have mentioned that someone, especially in adolescent IQ may change with age. In the study the scientists tested the intelligence of 19-teen boys and 14 girls aged 14 years, and then tested again at the age of 18.

Tests conducted in adolescents is a combination of brain scans and IQ tests of verbal and non-verbal communication made in 2004 and repeated in 2008. The results, found changes in tests of verbal IQ at 39 percent of teens and spatial reasoning IQ scores (proficiency tests) in 21 percent of respondents.

Researchers have claimed that this test has a level of validity that has, for the first time known to the variation in IQ scores are correlated with two different brain areas.

The increase in verbal IQ scores associated with the development density of the left hemisphere, an area that is active when a person speaks. Meanwhile, the increase in non-verbal IQ scores was associated with increasing density in the anterior cerebellum, an area associated with hand movements.

In his research report, Professor Cathy Price who is the lead researcher has explained that the results of this research could be evidence that the potential of someone’s intelligence can be improved. Professor Cathy Price says that during these children’s intelligence at an early age tend to be measured, but the results of this research indicate that children’s intelligence can still develop. Educators must be careful not to call anyone a low intelligence at an early age because of the fact, IQ is still able to increase a few years later

Nevertheless this study does not explain cause and effect of the increase in IQ in adolescents, the researchers also explained that the maturity level of teenagers is likely to occur at different ages.
