Most Medicare Patients with Cancer Get Good Surgical Care

cancerMost U.S. cancer patients included in Medicare receive appropriate surgical care in the nation’s hospitals, new research finds.

Scientists discovered that some hospitals follow established practice surgical recommendations in dealing with these patients, some diverge in the recommendations. The research, released online June 20 within the journal Archives of Surgery, was partly funded through the American Surgical Association.

Within the study, Dr. Caprice C. Greenberg, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and co-workers examined national data on surgical procedure of Medicare patients aged 65 and older who have been identified and among five kinds of cancer — breast, colon, gastric, rectal or thyroid — between The month of January 2000 and December 2005. The research authors centered on 11 National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommendations for surgical proper care of cancer patients.

A lot more than 90 % of hospitals stuck to seven from the 11 recommendations. The recommendations that appear to be adopted were individuals having a high NCCN rating.
