Salty foods can increase Stomach Cancer Risk

A diet high salinity may increase the risk of stomach cancers to 10 percent. This is the conclusion of a study conducted by several experts from South Korea who has done studies on over 2 million people.

Stomach cancers or gastric cancer, including many types of cancer in some people suffering around the world. Some studies found a link between salty foods and the incidence of gastric cancer. Mechanisms of cancer occurrence itself has not clearly known, but experts advise to limit salty foods to prevent cancer.

Through his research, Kim and his team Jeongseon from the National Cancer Center Research Institute examined the impact of salt that occurs in gastric cancer in more than 2 million people in South Korea. All the respondents have provided information about diet and their lifestyle. They also perform checkups between 1996 and 1997.

According to data available on the Korea Central Cancer Registry, for more than 7 years, 9,620 men and 2,773 women suffering from stomach cancer. Meanwhile, according to Kim and his team, people like to eat more salty foods have an increased risk 10 percent higher stomach cancer.

Seeing the results of the study, Dr Al B Benson, a gastric cancer specialist from Chicago, USA, who was not involved in the research, said that the results of these studies can not demonstrate a link between salted food and gastric cancer.

He said that how the salt consumed is more important. A study in Japan showed that sodium in the form of table salt is more associated with cardiovascular disease, not cancer. Meanwhile, salty foods, such as processed fish, just related to cancer.

“What must be known is how the use of salt in food, such as pickles or pickle made, the more risk of health problems,” said Benson.

Nevertheless, he said, salt restriction is more beneficial to prevent the rise in blood pressure.
