IVFExcessive stimulation by drugs used to enhance the production of eggs in IVF (in vitro fertilization / IVF) could actually increase the risk of babies born with abnormalities of Down syndrome.

In IVF, egg production should be increased because it takes more than one egg to obtain embryos. Stimulation is done with drugs hormone.

Excessive stimulation of cell production is feared to be fatal, especially in the egg. According to a study conducted in England, the expectant mothers aged over 35 years of egg production stimulants that can trigger the eggs with chromosomal abnormalities that cause the baby suffered from Down syndrome.

In a study led by Professor Alan Handyside, director of The London Bridge Fertility, Gynaecology and Genetics Centre, international experts using a new way of screening. With this method analyzed 100 eggs with abnormal chromosomes of 34 couples who have IVF. The average age was 40 years old couple.

Results of analysis found egg cell stimulation disrupt chromosome duplication process called meiosis. This causes abnormal chromosomes become so after the fertilized by a sperm cell divides into 23 pairs.

But experts pointed out that this is the beginning of the study. From this study are expected to create new strategies to reduce errors in chromosome IVF procedure.
